Mozambique

The best times to visit are between May and November, when both rainfall and temperatures are at their lowest. It's also possible to travel during the early part of the warmer, rainy season from November to January (though be prepared for high temperatures, especially in January). If possible, avoid the height of the rains - from about February to March/April - as many roads become impassable and flooding is common in the south and centre. Around Easter, Christmas/New Year's and in August, Mozambique's southern coastal resorts become overrun with the vacationing neighbors and advance bookings are highly advisable.

Travel Warning: Floods - Mines - Personal Safety

Heavy rain has devastated homes and livestock across Mozambique over the last few weeks, with the Zambezi valley particularly badly affected. Authorities have declared a red alert; travelers should monitor local conditions and exercise caution. The country's wet season lasts until March. There are still landmines in Mozambique, mainly in the central parts of the country, so don't wander off the beaten track.

Most travel in Mozambique is safe but violent crimes such as car-jacking and armed robbery are not uncommon in Maputo. Travelers are advised to exercise caution and use common sense; minimize the valuables you carry and don't put yourself in isolating situations, especially in urban areas and on beaches.
