Zanzibar Island is one of the most amazing places you will ever visit.
Changu Island
The main reason to go to Changu Island (also known as Prison Island) is the system of fairly healthy coral reefs surrounding it. Coral shaped like brains, antlers, trees, or boulders grows all around the island.
Kendwa Beach
From Nungwi, it is just over an hour’s walk via a dirt road to reach Kendwa. It is less than 30 minutes via the beach, but that’s only possible at low tide unless you want to wade waist high through the water or scramble onto sharp-edged coral cliffs and get entangled in spiky shrubs.
Main Sights in Stone Town
Waterfront: Beautifully restored mainly 19th century architecture. You get the best view from the ferry when you arrive. The Old Dispensary is one of these restored building.
Safari Blue
You start with a bus trip to the south of the island, where you will be picked up by little boats that take you to a sandbank.
Slave Chamber and Anglican Cathedral
I grope my way down the narrow stairs to the cells. Only two slits in the thick wall allow daylight to come in.
Snorkeling with dolphins
This was really cool. You can get a guide to Kizmkazi in Stone Town or on the north end of Zanzibar which includes round-trip bus travel and boat rental.
East Coast
It is very idyllic, with Blue Ocean and white sand. It is also very inexpensive, including the fresh crab and lobster. You can take a spice tour on your way out to the east coast.
Zanzibar
By the time we arrived in Zanzibar, I had already taken many photos from the plane. The most popular objects were the meandering wadis, and the mountains of Oman.
Paje
Paje beach has an extreme low tide, where the water goes out for 2km where the reef is. During this time, you can easily walk out to the reef and snorkel in very shallow water and see amazing fish.
Pongwe (General)
We arrived at our destination and found that we were the only ones there to enjoy the beautiful day. It was hot and sunny, and at low tide the shallow water was getting heated like a bath.
